Underfloor Heating – Ancient Concepts in Modern Applications

The concept of under floor heating is a very novel and brilliant idea. Unfortunately, after radiators were invented, the concept got lost somewhere. The appliances that we use for heaters at homes today all use the concept of radiation through the atmosphere. They get heated up, and then heat the air around them. Some systems also have a network of panels around the rooms of the homes, which thereby keep the home warm. However, this is not a very effective way. The moment you turn off the electricity, the devices turn cold, and hence stop heating the air around. Thus, they must be switched on at all times. This causes you to spend too much of money on electricity.

Ancient ideas

Ancient heating systems were much more effective. The Koreans in particular, used the novel concept of floor heating several thousand years ago. They used a network of passages below the floors of their homes which were kept warm during the nights by burning coals in them. This concept of underfloor heating has now been redeveloped and redesigned for modern homes. This is mainly because the government is becoming stricter about energy efficient devices, and is trying to incentivise as many people as possible to change their energy consuming appliances.

Advantages of modern systems

With the help of electric underfloor heating, your home tends to stay warm for a very long time, even if you have switched off the power. This is because the system requires a vacuum between the floor of your home and the foundation beneath where the network of pipes is kept. This vacuum will not get affected by any external influences for a very long time, and hence you need not keep the system on always. The underfloor heating systems of today are also much more effective. This is because they use the process of radiation, but from the floor itself. Since the floor stays warm longer, the air above it also stays uniformly warm and cosy. The cost of these electric under floor heating systems are very reasonable. You can make additional savings on the rebates offered by the government.
